Report
on a project teaching hearing children aged 5-7 years British
Sign Language in a mainstream school to promote the National
Curriculum.
" ...
we covered a lot of National Curriculum topics related to
food, drink, clothes, countries, maths, weather plus every
day issues that cropped up. No time was set aside for learning
BSL, it was merged into daily lessons using vocabulary related
to those lessons."
(Sandra Smith, BSL tutor)
"Any school
seeing what's going on here would want it for themselves."
(Celia Whittingham, head teacher of mainstream school)
"I didn't
see it as an extra, the way they approached it making it part
of the school day was really good."
(Parent of a hearing child)
